Wayne P. Bates, 87, of Lyme, NH, passed away on the morning of January 25th, 2024 after a brief hospitalization.

He was born at Alice Peck Day Hospital in Lebanon, NH on July 10th, 1936 to Sarah (Pushee) Bates and Zelma Bates. Wayne was an only child.

A standout in Track and Field, he graduated from Lebanon High School and in 1957 married the love of his life, Margaret (Bellavance) Bates.

Wayne and his wife moved to Montpelier, VT where they raised four children and Wayne completed a 35 year career as a sales representative for Nabisco, wholesaling Nabisco cookies and crackers to stores throughout central Vermont.

Wayne was a lifelong member of the Elks Club and served as Exalted Ruler at the Montpelier Lodge.

He retired to the River Road in Lyme, NH, where he took pride in mowing lawns for the Lyme Cemetery, as well as volunteering for Meals-On-Wheels and as a wheelchair attendant at Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital.

He took pride in his world class vegetable and flower gardens, giving flowers away to passers-by who admired his work.

His grandchildren will never forget fishing and riding on the “Party Barge” up and down the Connecticut River

Wayne will be remembered for his quick wit and ready sense of humor. He could make anybody laugh.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret, and three children, Tony, and his wife Bamby of Salisbury, VT, Philip, and his wife Stephanie of Concord, NH, and Sarah, of Scarborough, ME, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Wayne was predeceased by a son, Bobby, in 1990.

A Celebration of Life will take place at Lui Lui’s Restaurant in West Lebanon on Saturday, February 10th, 2024 from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M.
